Stacy has been the honorary Chairman of the Cleft Palate Foundation for the past twenty-five years. Born with a cleft lip himself, he spends a great deal of time talking to parents and kids about what it means to be born with a cleft. Stacy joined the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Washington DC, in an effort to convince Congress that insurance companies should not be allowed to confuse reconstructive surgery with cosmetic surgery. Children with clefts may need multiple operations to correct both lip and cleft. There are other costs associated with ear duct repair, dental work, and speech therapy. It is criminal that these costs are not recognized as necessary to a child’s well-being. Stacy lends his voice to challenge those in Washington who consider cleft surgery “cosmetic.”
